Richard Olson, the Talk To Me Guy, and I had an amazing conversation (that actually went on about 2 hours AFTER we stopped recording) covering so much material from New Monasticism and Interspirituality to mysticism and how spirituality can help us through the today’s challenging times.
Here’s a short excerpt:
“We're never going to get away from what I would call the spiritual urge to explore the three main questions. Who am I? Or what am I? What's going on here? And how am I supposed to live in relationship to that? We never get away from those. We just come up with other ways of answering them. And right now, those answers are largely through science. But before that, they were through the mystical experience and the observation of the world around us. And we were wowed by it.
But we moved during the Enlightenment into the age of Rationalism, and we killed that experience to the point where people think religion or faith, or a spiritual experience that is not just a bliss bunny experience, but a really powerful experience of the sacred, is foolish, somehow childish. We live in an age that is so profoundly secular that we have lost that connection, that relationship to whatever it is you want to call it, that's bigger than us. To our detriment.
There is nothing rational about spirituality. It's not rational. It's a knowing that can't be proven. I can't prove to you my experience of Ultimate Reality, the Source of life, God, or whatever you want to call it. I can't prove that to you. That's just my experience. Or yours. And it’s valid. And deeply necessary.”
